Mission Statement

The Lac du Flambeau Coalition works collaboratively to prevent and reduce substance abuse, especially among youth,
by promoting healthy lifestyles.
The attached letter was sent by Chris Wardlow from the Wisconsin Prevention Network to Rep. Bies regarding AB 57 which addresses synthetic marijuana and "bath salts".  He is both the author of the bill and the chair of the committee that it was sent to.

ACCOMPLISHMENTS AND CONTINUING EFFORTS

Environmental Strategies

Town Hall Meeting held April 16, 2010 was a collaborative meeting with service providers to inform participants on the data for underage drinking and to help develope strategies to prevent and reduce underage drinking. A follow up meeting with community memebers will be held in the fall of 2010

2010 Party Patrols - LdF Tribal Police Department has been contracted to implement Party Patrols to gather data on underage drinking.

Spring 2009 and Spring 2010 Parents Who Host Lose the Most (PWHLTM)
PWHLTM Stickers placed on alcohol containers at LdF Smoke Shop
PWHLTM Yard Signs were posted around the community
PWHLTM Logo with message printed on 8th grade promotion programs
PWHLTM Logo with message printed on Honor Pow-wow program
Local Business put PWHLTM stickers on their packaging, pizza boxes, sandwich wrappers, etc.
Resolution passed by LdF Tribal Council to support the PWHLTM campaign
Resolution passed by LdF School Board to support the PWHLTM campaign

Educational Awareness Events
Booth with prevention literature at LdF Grade School at Parent/Teacher conferences
Booth with prevention literature at LdF Grade School in conjunction with book fair
2008 Town Hall meeting at LdF Wellness Center
Annual Family Fun Day held each year in February at YMCA Camp Nawakwa - to promote substance free family & community gatherings to help intergenerational bonding and communication, which is considered a protective factor against youth substance abuse

2008 Park Restoration / Revitalization - In partnership with the Lakeland Assembly Church housing project playgrounds were cleaned and assessed for safety. Needs identified were: unsafe equipment needing replacement, signs need to be posted for non alcohol drug and tobacco use on the playgrounds, lighting needed in some areas of the playground. Coalition is seeking partnerships and funding to meet these needs

Education / Training

Prevention Specialist Certification 4 community service providers have attended trainings in preparation to be certificed as Prevention Specialists, of these 4, 1 was certified in the summer 2009, 3 others are continuing to attend "Prevention Specialist in Training" workshops

Substance Abuse Prevention Training - Coalition members have had the opportunity to attend various trainings within the state and nationally to expand their knowledge of substance abuse prevention to assist the coalition with underage drinking prevention efforts.

Gradeschool Prevention Newsletter - Middle School students, with leadership from the prevention specialist in training guidance counselor, produced quarterly newsletters in both 2008/09 and 2009/10 school years which was sent out to all parents.

2009 Launched Minobimaadiziiwin Coalition Website
2010 Established Facebook page for Minobimaadiziiwin Coalition - as of July 29, 2010 we have 176 friends.

Americorps

Marshfield Clinic AmeriCorps - Lashawnda Maulson is completing her first year and will return for a 2nd year to assist the coalition with underge drinking prevention efforts. The host site is the Lac du Flambeau Public School.

Tribal AmeriCorps - Two members have been selected pending approval by Sokaogon Chippewa Tribe and will start September 13, 2010. One host site is the Lac du Flambeau Public School, and the other host site is the Family Resource Center, Juvinile Justice Program.

Congratulations to Lashawnda Maulson for being slected to the 2010 cohort of CADCA's National Coalition Institute Amabssador Program.
