Environmental Strategies
Smoke Free Policy for NEW LDF Waaswaaganing Indian Bowl Living Arts and Culture Center
Minobimaadiziiwin Coalition formed the Asemaa Committee collaboratively with Clinton Isham, Wisconsin Native American Tobacco Network Director from Great Lakes Inter-Tribal Council. The Asemaa Committee worked on the development of a smoke free policy that was approved by the board of the Waaswaaganing Indian Bowl Living Arts and Cultural Center that was constructed and opened in 2017.
Town Hall Meetings Annually from 2008-2019
Hosted to inform participants on underage drinking and other substance abuse data, distribute educational awareness materials on substance abuse prevention, and to gather input to assist with prevention strategies to reduce underage drinking and other substance abuse.
Party Patrols Since 2010
Lac du Flambeau (LdF) Tribal Police Department has been implementing Party Patrols to gather data on underage drinking.

Winter Family Fun Day Annually from 2008-2019
Winter Family Fun Day sponsored annually in February since 2008 at YMCA Camp Nawakwa to promote substance free family & community gatherings to help intergenerational bonding and communication, which is considered a protective factor against youth substance abuse. Attendance has increased each year. New in 2012 was the addition of Ojibwe Winter Games coordinated by the LdF Tribal Ojibwe Language Program. Due to the pandemic, this event was canceled in 2020, 2021 and 2022.
2008 Park Restoration/Revitalization
In partnership with the Lakeland Assembly Church housing project playgrounds were cleaned and assessed for safety. Needs identified were: unsafe equipment needing replacement, signs need to be posted for non alcohol drug and tobacco use on the playgrounds, lighting needed in some areas of the playground. Since then the LDF Tribal Roads and Planning Department have worked diligently to revitalize community parks.

Funding Awards:
- The Lac du Flambeau Tribe received a Strategic Prevention Framework (SPF) Partnership for Success (PFS) Grant via Great Lakes Intertribal Council (GLITC) for a Prevention Program linked directly to the Minobimaadiziiwin Coalition. There were four tribes funded under this grant (Bad River, LDF, LCO, Menominee) for five years of funding from October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2020. A Prevention Coordinator, Lashawnda Maulson, was hired in March 2016 to coordinate the SPF PFS Grant. The activities for the first year of the grant were to administer Community Needs Assessments, complete Key Stakeholder Interviews, and administer Key Stakeholder Surveys. Implementation of prevention strategies started October 1, 2016
- The Minobimaadiziiwin Coalition received a SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration) Service to Science Initiative Grant for "Building Evaluation Capacity for Evidence-Based Interventions" which was implemented in 2013. As a result of grant activities, a Vision statement was completed; a 2013-2015 Minobimaadiziiwin Coalition Strategic Plan was completed; a Coalition Effectiveness Survey was administered with coalition members; a Community Needs Assessment Survey was drafted and piloted before a final version was administered in 2014 with the LDF community; focus groups were held to gather input on community needs; research was done to select a database management system to provide data for community agencies & coalitions to use when applying for grants, writing reports, and for community awareness. A revised Minobimaadiziiwin Strategic Plan was completed for 2021-2024. The database management system project is currently being collaborated with the LDF Tribe.
Education and Training
Prevention Specialist Certification Training
Four community service providers attended in preparation to be certified as Prevention Specialists. One was certified in the summer 2009 and one was certified in 2013.
Substance Abuse Prevention Training
Coalition members have attended numerous trainings within the state and nationally to expand their knowledge of substance abuse prevention to assist the coalition with underage drinking prevention efforts.
LDF School Prevention Newsletter
Middle School students, with leadership from the guidance counselor, produced quarterly newsletters in both 2008/09 and 2009/10 school years which was sent out to all parents.
